Braving incessant rains several thousand people late Saturday afternoon poured onto streets of Edipora Bomai, in Sopore, when the body of Sajad Ahmad Lone (21) son of retired policeman Mohammad Akber Lone reached home for last rites.

Sajad was one of the two militants killed in a gunfight in Amargrah area of Sopore on Saturday.

Sajad had left home before 2016 Kashmir uprising and joined Hizb ranks. He was pursuing a PG from IGNOU from Sopore College.

Sajad’s mother, who was waiting for her son’s body to arrive, was holding a pot full of candies in her hands. When Sajad’s body arrived, like his mother, dozens of women showered plateful of candies over his body from the balconies and windows of their homes.

The woman sang “tera bayee, mera bayee, Adil bayee Adil bayee, wala myani shahedo, bochh ma lajee (come my martyr, you might be hungry).

Scores of men and women wept bitterly as the body was being carried towards final resting place.
