SRINAGAR: On December 12, a wave of mourning erupted in north Kashmir’s Sopore region when a 15-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping from a bridge into the river Jhelum.

As per the information shared by her mother, the girl left the house on Monday evening after informing her elder sister that she would look for her mother outside who was reportedly not present at home at that moment.

“She left the house after you, my elder daughter told me,” her mother told this reporter at her residence on December 19, 2022. “The doctors had already advised us to take care of her.  And when I searched for her outside, the shopkeeper told me that my daughter was walking towards the bridge over Jhelum River.”

Even with the continuous efforts of the local people and the struggle of the divers, her body couldn’t be recovered from the river, so far.

A large crowd of people would come to the spot and would capture the scene on camera which they later uploaded on social media.

Almost nine days after the mishap, the authorities banned clicking photos and videos of the search and rescue operation sites in the town.

“People were coming near to the site, clicking videos and photos which were having every possibility of any untoward incident,” the order reads.
