SRINAGAR: Police have arrested seven people in five separate cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and recovered more than 3.3 kg of contraband substances during intensified naka checking and surveillance across Anantnag district.
In the first case, a police team from Police Station Srigufwara intercepted Riyaz Ahmad Hajam, a resident of Sirhama, during naka checking at Nowshera Crossing near Gujjar Hostel. Police said 3.52 grams of charas and 368 grams of ganja were recovered during his search. FIR No. 95/2026 under Section 8/21 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Srigufwara and investigation initiated.
At Kullar, a team from Police Station Pahalgam intercepted a Scorpio bearing registration number JK01X-3588 while it was travelling towards the link road leading to Movera. Police identified the occupants as driver Fareed Ahmad Chohan and co-driver Fayaz Ahmad Doie, both residents of Kharpora Movera.
During the search, 80-90 grams of dried bhang bhoosa was allegedly recovered from the driver, while five grams of charas was recovered from the co-driver. The vehicle and suspected contraband were seized, and both men were taken into custody. FIR No. 89/2026 has been registered under relevant provisions of law at Police Station Pahalgam.
In another operation, police from Police Post Janglat Mandi apprehended Junaid Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Sherpora, during checking at Donipawa. Five grams of charas was recovered from his possession, following which cognizance was taken and investigation initiated.
Police Station Anantnag personnel also apprehended Imtiyaz Ahmed Lone, a resident of Seepan, at Nandpora. Police said 2.5 kg of charas powder was recovered from his possession. The matter has been taken up for investigation.
At Batengoo Crossing, a police team from Police Post Khanabal arrested Zubair Ahmad Dar and Shahid Gulzar, both residents of Batengoo. Around 200 grams of ganja was allegedly recovered from Zubair, while 150 grams was recovered from Shahid.
FIR No. 344/2026 under Sections 8/20-29 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Anantnag and investigation has been launched.
Police said the operations form part of intensified efforts to curb the supply and distribution of narcotics in the district. The Anantnag Police also appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse.
