Sub-Zero Cold Grips Jammu Kashmir as MeT Predicts Rain, Snow

   

SRINAGAR: Several parts of Jammu and Kashmir recorded sub-zero minimum temperatures, with Pulwama emerging as the coldest place in the Kashmir division at minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, according to data compiled by Kashmir Weather.

In the Kashmir division, Shopian recorded a low of minus 3.9°C, while Srinagar Airport, Awantipora and Anantnag each recorded minus 2.8°C. Pahalgam saw a minimum of minus 2.6°C, Gulmarg minus 2.3°C, Budgam minus 2.2°C and Pampore minus 2.5°C. Srinagar city recorded minus 1.5°C, Qazigund and Sonamarg minus 1.6°C each, Kupwara minus 1.4°C and Bandipora minus 0.7°C. Kokernag registered 0.2°C, Baramulla 0.4°C and Ganderbal 0.1°C, while data for Kulgam was not available.

In the Jammu division, Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 4.7°C, while Jammu Airport logged 3.2°C. Banihal recorded 2.9°C, Bhaderwah 2.0°C, Udhampur 3.0°C, Kathua and Rajouri 3.8°C each. Batote recorded 7.7°C, Katra 8.8°C, Ramban 6.5°C, Poonch, Doda and Kishtwar 7.0°C each, and Reasi 5.3°C.

In the Union Territory of Ladakh, Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.8°C, Kargil minus 8.3°C and Nubra Valley minus 7.1°C.

The weather across Jammu and Kashmir has remained largely dry during Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period, which began on December 21.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast light rain and snow at scattered places across Jammu and Kashmir from January 16. It has also predicted moderate to heavy rain and snowfall over the Chenab Valley, Udhampur and Reasi districts, and parts of south Kashmir during January 23 and 24.
