Two militants were killed in an ongoing encounter with counter insurgent forces at Sugoo village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday.

An official said a Joint team of Army, Special Operations Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a cordon-and-search-operation after “specific inputs” about the presence of militants in the area.

As such the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, triggering off a brief exchange of fire, he said.

He said in the initial phase of a gunfight, two militants have been killed and operation is going on. The identity slain militants were not known immediately, said the official.

This is third encounter in Shopian since Sunday.

On Sunday a top Hizb commander including five militants were killed in Reban village of the district.

On Monday four militants were killed in Pinjoora area of the district.
