SRINAGAR: Two militants have been killed in Tahab village of Pulwama, reports said.

Details revealed that the police and the army had laid a siege in the belt late last evening. It was during wee hours that a gun battle broke out in which two militants were killed.

A police officer said that the cordon was laid on basis of the specific inputs about militant presence. Early morning, the militants tried breaking the cordon and it was during this process that they were killed.

“They were holed up in a house but to break out the cordon and flee, militants had came out and were killed in the open,” the officer said. “It will take a bit of time to get their identity but we are sure one of them is a local.”

Tahab is is a major village in the immediate periphery of Pulwama. It has remained highly restive during the 2016 unrest.

One report, not immediately confirmed by the police, identified the two militant as locals Irfan and Abid. There were also reports of protests from the area. Police, however, identified the slain duo as Shariq Ahmad and Shabir Ahmad.
