Police resorted to cane charge and tear gas shelling in Nowhatta area of the old city as people started sloganeering after Friday prayers outside Jamia Masjid.
People assembled outside the Jamia Masjid and started marching amid anti-India and pro-freedom slogans. As the protesters reached Rangerstop, a large contingent of police already deployed in the area cane charged to disperse them which followed by tear gas shelling.
Police and the protesters pelted stones at each other and the violent clashes were on when the reports last came in.
Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had called for “Shopian Challo” to express solidarity with the people of the north town who are facing strict curfew from September 7.
Five people were killed in Shopian in two different incidents of firing by CRPF in Gagren area of the town on September 7 and 11.
Authorities put Mirwaiz and other Hurriyat (M) leaders under house arrest to foil their attempt to reach Shopian.
