SRINAGAR

After Kashmiri students alleged thrashing by non-local student at Srinagar’s NIT, Police on Saturday arrested nine J&K students and a warden of Mewar University in Chittorgarh area of Rajasthan over clashes post West Indies’ victory over India in World T-20 semi-final on March 31.

“We were sitting in our hostel rooms when one of our friends was abused and thrashed by students from Jammu after India lost match against West Indies on Thursday night,” a Srinagar based newspaper reported while quoting a BTech student from Kashmir.

In the meantime, the other students from Jammu, he said, hurled choicest abuses on every Kashmiri and started beating hostel doors. However, he said, Kashmiris maintained calm and did not respond to them despite their repeated attempts to attack them.

Meanwhile, police were informed immediately and cops reached the spot without any delay and brought the situation under control throughout the night.

Following the night, when the class work was set to begin, he said, the Jammu counterparts again thrashed the Kashmiris and hurled abuses amid slogans like “Bharat Kay Gadaro Ko Wapes Karo Wapes Karo“.

“Few Kashmiri students and warden suffered minor injuries in the incident.”

Later, police arrested four Kashmiri students and a Kashmiri warden and five students from Jammu.

“There were seven wards in the university and only one warden was arrested as he is a Kashmiri.”

Sources identified the arrested Kashmiris as Tajamul Ahmad (MSc student), Asif Ahmad (BBA LLB student), Owais Ahmad (MBA student), Tawseef Ahmad (BBA LLB) and Najeeb Shah (Kashmiri Warden). Two among the five arrested students from Jammu region has been identified as Atul Singh and Monik Sharma, both pursuing BTech in the varsity.

“Why our colleagues have been arrested? Let them arrest Jammu students who created trouble, why always Kashmiris,” a group of students said.

“Had we have raised any anti-national slogans, we should be made held accountable. What is our fault if India lost to west Indies”, they said, adding, “We feel insecure since last month when one of our colleague had brought mutton (meat) and the same students alleged that we have taken beef and spread rumours due to which many of our students were beaten and one of a shop belonging to Muslim outside the university was set on fire without any reason.”

When contacted, Station House Officer (SHO) Gangrar, Inspector Labhu Ram said that 10 students and a warden have been arrested.

“A case under FIR Number 87/2016 under sections 160 IPC and 151 CrPc has been registered against the group of students and further investigations have been taken up”, Labhu Ram said.

Meanwhile, university’s PRO Hundal Widhani was quoted as having said that varsity have ordered an inquiry into the incident and a committee has been formed to enquire into circumstances that led to the clashes post cricket match between India and West Indies.

While police have filed a case, the university too is investigating it, he said.
