SRINAGAR: A woman was swept away in a flash flood triggered by heavy overnight rain in the Raipur Domana area of Jammu district on Sunday morning, while her husband narrowly escaped.
According to eyewitnesses, the couple had come outside their house after water levels suddenly rose behind their residence.
The husband reportedly said that a strong surge of water came from behind and caused their car, bearing registration number JK11 1546, to shake. When he tried to move the vehicle to a safer location, the gushing water engulfed it before he could get inside.
His wife, who followed him to call him back and help him, was caught in the powerful current. Both were swept away, but the man managed to cling to the side and survive. His wife was carried downstream and remained missing at the time of the report.
Local residents said heavy rain since early morning had caused a sudden rise in water levels in a nearby nallah, creating a flash-flood-like situation in the area.
Following the incident, locals launched a search operation in the muddy stream using ropes. Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams also reached the spot and began efforts to trace the missing woman.
The rescue operation was continuing when the report was filed. (GNS)
