Senior legal expert, Zafar Amin Queshi was elected new president of Kashmir High Court Bar Association, a powerful organization of legal scientists which very strongly favours the secessionist movement in Kashmir. Qureshi, by the active support of the incumbent Bar Chief, advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom who had not participated in the elections citing personal reasons, defeated Nazir Ahmad Ronga, a close aide of Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference. Qureshi got 338 votes against 234 of Ronga. 781 lawyers were eligible to vote but only 577 of them cast ballot. Five votes were rejected.
Kashmir High Court Bar Association is a voluntary association of practicing lawyers. The office bearers of the association are elected every year by the way of a secret ballot and the election is held by an independent election commission. According to sources close to Bar, the chief election commissioner takes charge of every task related to the conduct of elections before a prescribed period from the elections.
As soon as the Election Commission of Bar announced the results, Qureshi’s rejoicing supporters garlanded him and raised slogans, ‘Shohda Key Waris Zinda Hai, Zinda Hai’ (The heirs of martyrs are alive). Zafar Qureshi, 62, did his elementary education from the famous Tyndale Biscoe before joining SP College for graduation. He completed his B.Sc from University of Kashmir and opted for law. Zafar Qureshi went to Muslim University Aligarh for LLB degree. He completed his LLB in 1971 and did a diploma in Foreign Affairs before returning to Kashmir.
Zafar Amin Qureshi basically hails from the very volatile Maisuma area of Srinagar. Later, he migrated to Iqbal Colony, Indira Nagar and is residing there. Advocate Qureshi started practicing in his native city and he was given the membership of the Kashmir High Court Bar Association in 1972. Qureshi , a keen political observer strongly believes that Kashmir tangle needs to be resolved according to the wishes of the masses. While talking to Kashmir life, advocate Qureshi said that Kashmir High Court Bar Association will continue to council the separatist leaders and activists free of any kind of charges who are arrested and need legal assistance. He said, “It has been a practice of the Bar since 1990 when it was decided unanimously so the practice will go on”.
“Bar would continue to put in its efforts for the resolution of Kashmir issue” said Zafar Qureshi after he was declared elected. He added, “It is a new team and we will work for the resolution of Kashmir issue as per the resolutions passed by the J&K Bar Association and the junior members in the Bar.” Zafar Amin Qureshi will assume the charge of Kashmir High Court Bar Association on September 1 after he was sworn in.
