SRINAGAR: At least 11 fire incidents were reported across the Kashmir Division during the past 24 hours, causing damage to residential, commercial and agricultural properties, officials said on Tuesday.
The Fire and Emergency Services Kashmir Division said its personnel responded promptly to all distress calls and succeeded in preventing the further spread of flames, thereby averting major losses.
In Srinagar’s Umar Colony, Lal Bazar, a three-storey residential house was damaged in a fire incident. In north Kashmir, a single-storey school structure caught fire at Dewan Bagh in Sopore area of Baramulla district. In Ganderbal district, a haystack used as cow fodder was gutted in Chewa area of Safapora.
In south Kashmir, a shed made of GCI sheets was damaged in Letpora area of Awantipora in Pulwama district, while a shop was affected by fire in Bongam area of Shopian. Another fire incident damaged a double-storey residential house at Gund in Qazigund area of Kulgam district.
In Kupwara district, a walnut tree was damaged due to fire at Pir Khan Abad, while a cowshed was damaged in Magam area.
Officials said the remaining incidents involved minor fire outbreaks which were brought under control in time, preventing any major damage.
Authorities have once again urged the public to strictly follow fire safety advisories, particularly during the winter season, and to immediately inform Fire and Emergency Services in case of any fire-related emergency.
According to official data, Jammu and Kashmir received 6,752 fire calls in 2024, including 42 false alarms. During the year, 2,938 buildings were affected by fires, while property worth approximately Rs 1,699 crore was saved. Most fire incidents were attributed to LPG leakages, electrical overloads, short circuits and the increased use of heating appliances.
However, data on fire incidents for 2025 has not yet been released by the department.
