SRINAGAR: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone, VK Birdi, on Wednesday said that comprehensive security arrangements have been finalised for the annual Amarnath Yatra, set to begin next week. He emphasised the crucial role of local residents in ensuring the safe and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.
Speaking to the media in Pahalgam, IGP Birdi said the Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with other security agencies, has put in place a robust, multi-layered security plan. “Compared to last year, this time we have multi-layered and in-depth security arrangements to ensure the pilgrimage is safe and smooth for devotees,” he said.
He added that security measures have been divided into sections and sectors along the Yatra route and across the valley. Each area is undergoing Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) drills to enhance readiness and improve response during any contingency.
“The aim of these drills is to ensure swift and effective action. Today, these drills are being conducted across the valley—whether in camps, on road sections, or in interior areas—so that all personnel are clear about their roles and remain fully alert,” Birdi said.
The Kashmir Police Chief also underlined the importance of public cooperation. “No pilgrimage can take place without the support of local residents. Their assistance is key to its success. During our interactions, locals have shown great enthusiasm in welcoming devotees and providing them with all possible support,” he added. (KNO)
