Authorities Crack Down on Jail Radicalisation: Surprise Checks, Segregation Policies in Focus

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir authorities have significantly tightened jail rules to curb radicalisation and prevent any contact between militant inmates and criminal prisoners, as part of a broader crackdown on prison-linked extremist recruitment and terror planning. According to Daily Excelsior, this initiative comes amid heightened vigilance, periodic surprise checks, and strict segregation policies following recent raids at high-security facilities, including Kot Bhalwal and Poonch.

Counter-Intelligence (CID) Jammu teams have discovered that sustained, round-the-clock interaction between hardened militants and ordinary criminal offenders within jail premises was facilitating radical indoctrination and logistical support for terror networks. Security agencies concluded that a petty criminal could be quickly converted to a militant recruit if exposed to extremist influences inside prisons—an established pattern in conflict zones globally.

Authorities are now enforcing the segregation of Pakistani and Kashmiri militant detainees from each other and from the general prisoner population. This measure seeks to choke off avenues for developing new terror modules and prevent the transfer of ideological, technical, and operational know-how. In the past, jails in the region had been misused for clandestine communications, with mobile phones and SIM cards found hidden among inmates, amplifying security concerns.

The latest directives are part of a region-wide preventive framework, including coordinated searches across districts, scrutiny of overground terror worker networks, intensive monitoring of vendors and suppliers, and a crackdown on any attempt to exploit system vulnerabilities. Security forces have also intensified frisking and patrolling at vital locations, with regular audits and enhanced community policing initiatives.

Officials stress that prevention inside jails is often more effective than responding to incidents outside, as prisons remain high-risk incubators for future terror activity. Sustained vigilance and system-tightening measures, they argue, are now indispensable to counter the evolving sophistication of terror threats in Jammu and Kashmir.
