In a bid to force administration to initiate action against land grabbers, who have illegally grabbed state land earlier, scores of residents of Barsoo area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district Thursday occupied 400 kanals of state land near Sainik School Mansbal.

Eyewitnesses said that scores of Barsoo residents illegally occupied 400 kanals of state land. “The people carrying spades, wire, and sticks emerged from Barsoo area and illegally occupied the state land. The people did all this to force administration to take action against the land grabbers who have already grabbed state land comprising hundreds of kanals at the same place,” said a resident of Barsoo.

“Yes, we grabbed the state land but we have no ill intention. We won’t dismantle the fencing till the administration did not take back the land occupied by land grabbers from the same place. Government has always encouraged these land grabbers who have occupied hundreds of kanals of state land illegally,” people said adding that there is a lesson for the government in their action.

Tehsildar Lar, Dr Nazir Ahmed Bhat confirmed that people of Barsoo occupied the state land but added that he has directed Patwari and other officials to take stock of the situation. He said that the administration will not allow people to take law in their own hands. “Occupation of government land by some vested interests in past can not justify the current action of the people. We will certainly free the government land from all the land grabbers,” he said.
