SRINAGAR: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that Article 370 was a temporary measure and it prevented very progressive laws from being extended to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

“It prevented very progressive laws from being extended to Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh at that point,” he said while addressing the Indian community members in Singapore.

Jaishankar emphasized the adverse repercussions, asserting, “It created an ethos of separatism, violence, and terrorism,” which posed significant security challenges for the nation.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the abrogation, Jaishankar remarked, “Today, you can see the benefits of the change that has happened.”

He attributed the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019 as a pivotal step in addressing these challenges and unlocking developmental opportunities for the region. Jaishankar elucidated, “The benefits of the change are now visible.”
