Dr Shamim Ahmed Wani, 54, a 1999 batch KAS officer, currently posted as Special Secretary Finance, died of Covid-19 at Jammu Medical College. He had given only two years out of the finance department when he was DC Kulgam. His death has shocked his colleagues who knew him as positive, soft-spoken and somebody who knew his job well, the public finance. A resident of Pandach in the Srinagar periphery, Shamim is survived by his wife, a dental surgeon, and a daughter who has just been enrolled for graduation. His sister; a widow, was also almost dependent on the officer.

Hailstorm is normal in Kashmir but last week it was as if snow in parts of Kulgam. It blocked roads and people swept it from their courtyards. It was quite thick, heavy and continued for more than 20 minutes. After mass outcry, the Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested most of the right-wing gangsters who in Garhote village of Bhalwal in Jammu almost killed Muslim Gujjar cousins. Muhammad Sideeq and Mir Hussain had a providential escape in the serious assault on their life by cow vigilantes. One of them is admitted to the GMC Jammu with 17 stitches. Cow vigilantes attacked them while they were carrying their bulls’ home. The victims and the assailants belong to the same village.

A south Kashmir doctor has won hearts in his belt as he moves from door to door with his team for treating the Covid-19 patients. Identified as Dr Raashid Rasheed, a medical officer posted at Public Health Centre K Kalan, a small village six km from Bijbehara town, he has been advising people on phone at his own cost. Wherever required, he moves with his aides and treats the patients at their respective homes. He even delivers equipment’s like Oximeters at homes and helps them to understand their use. Dr Raashid has completed his MBBS from GMC Jammu in 2007, has been rendering his services for nearly 14 years now.
