Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi on Wednesday said the changing paradigms of higher education are going to throw up new challenges and opportunities for teachers and they need to constantly update themselves on information and knowledge they possess.

Addressing college and university teachers at the valedictory function of 73rd General Orientation Course and three-week Refresher Course, Prof Andrabi said: “Things in the higher education sector have undergone (and continue to undergo) a huge change and our teachers have to be ready to face the new challenges in their way. This is why these orientation and refresher courses become all the more important.”

The General Orientation Course and Refresher Course in Women and Child Development were organised by the KU’s UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC).

Prof Andrabi also spoke about the importance of ‘teaching ethics’ in order to become “better teachers. “The actual essence is to improve upon things and change with the changing paradigms to stay relevant,” he said. “If we don’t keep pace with the changing scenarios and trends, we shall be in the face of getting irrelevant.”

Dean College Development Council Prof Neelofar Khan, who coordinated the Refresher Course, said “such trainings would certainly bring about a positive change in the personality of the participants and in turn have a positive impact on the overall functioning of the institutions they work in.”

Director UGC-HRDC Prof Mohi-ud-Din Sangmi deliberated upon the aims and objectives of such programmes. ‘It was a challenging task to arrange resource persons for the two workshops in view of the circumstances that prevailed in Kashmir in the past few months. However we have been able to conclude both the courses successfully and are committed to improve upon the feedback from our participants.”

Coordinator at UGC-HRDC Dr Geer Mohammad Ishaq gave a detailed account of how the two programmes were conducted.
