Delhi Hotel Fire Kills at Least 21; PM Modi Announces Rs 2 Lakh Ex-Gratia

   

SRINAGAR: At least 21 people have been killed and more than 40 others rescued after a major fire broke out at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning, NDTV reported.

According to Hindustan Times, a majority of the deceased are believed to be foreign nationals, with officials stating that several victims are from Central Asia and Africa. Authorities added that the death toll could rise as rescue and identification operations continue.

The fire reportedly began around 8:50 am in the basement restaurant of the Flourish Stay hotel, situated in a five-storey building. It later spread to an adjoining hotel, Micasa Inn.

Fire services deployed multiple units to the scene, including two water tenders, two water bowsers, a quick response vehicle and other firefighting equipment after receiving an emergency call from the densely populated locality, which is frequented by students and young professionals.

Officials said rescue operations were undertaken to evacuate guests trapped inside the building, with more than 40 people rescued from the affected premises.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased, while Rs 50,000 would be provided to the injured.

Describing the incident as tragic, the Prime Minister said that authorities were extending all possible assistance to those affected.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed profound grief over the fire incident that resulted in the loss of lives.

In a post on X, he conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. The Chief Minister also expressed solidarity with all those affected by the tragedy.
