In a statement posted on X, the NCS said the tremor occurred at 7:45 am IST at a depth of 64 kilometres, with its epicentre located at latitude 0.41° North and longitude 99.75° East in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
The latest quake follows a series of similar seismic events in the region. On December 3, Northern Sumatra was jolted by a 4.4-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometres, while another tremor of magnitude 4.5 struck the area on November 26, the NCS reported.
Earlier in October, a stronger earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale hit West Papua, Indonesia. That tremor occurred at 11:57 am IST, with its epicentre at latitude 2.26° South and longitude 138.86° East, at a depth of 55 kilometres beneath the surface.
Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis due to its location along the Ring of Fire, also known as the Circum-Pacific Belt. This horseshoe-shaped seismic zone, stretching about 40,000 kilometres around the Pacific Ocean, contains nearly two-thirds of the world’s volcanoes and accounts for around 90 per cent of global earthquakes.
