SRINAGAR: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake, with its epicentre in Tajikistan, was felt across parts of the Kashmir region in the early hours of Friday at around 2.45 am on January 9, 2026.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property from anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir. Residents in several areas reported experiencing brief tremors, officials said.
While authorities indicated there was no immediate cause for concern, experts reiterated that the region lies in a seismically active zone. Noted Kashmir-based geologist Shakil Ahmad Romshoo said in a post on social media that Jammu and Kashmir remains seismically vulnerable.
Romshoo stated that the tremor was a reminder of the need to strengthen earthquake awareness, preparedness and the adoption of safe practices across Jammu and Kashmir.
Further details were awaited at the time of filing this report.
