The quake, which hit shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time, caused widespread destruction across Negros and Cebu provinces, toppling buildings, damaging roads, and triggering landslides in mountainous areas. Rescue workers said the death toll was expected to rise as dozens remained trapped under debris.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the epicentre was located off the coast of Negros Oriental at a depth of 10 kilometres. Tremors were felt in several neighbouring islands, including Bohol and Panay, forcing thousands of residents to flee homes, schools and offices in panic.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered military and emergency units to assist in relief operations. “We are mobilising all resources to ensure swift rescue and medical aid to affected communities,” his office said in a statement as per BBC.

Hospitals in Cebu City and Dumaguete reported an influx of casualties, with many suffering from head injuries, fractures and trauma caused by collapsing structures. Emergency shelters have been set up as aftershocks continue to rattle the region.

Electricity and communication lines were disrupted in several districts, complicating rescue efforts. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) confirmed at least 20 landslides, while portions of highways remained blocked by fallen debris.

Authorities ruled out a tsunami threat but warned residents to remain vigilant due to the risk of further aftershocks. The United Nations and neighbouring countries, including Japan, have offered assistance in relief and recovery.

The Philippines, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is highly prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Wednesday’s quake is one of the strongest to strike the region in recent years.
