SRINAGAR: A powerful earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Saturday, triggering a tsunami warning, Reuters reported.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the quake at magnitude 7.1 with a shallow depth of 10 km, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated it at 7.4 with a depth of 39.5 km. The epicentre was located about 112 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) cautioned that the tremor could generate hazardous waves in the region. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.
Authorities said monitoring is under way and urged residents to remain alert. Further details are awaited.
