SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved the deployment of Ex-Servicemen (ESM) volunteers to protect critical infrastructure across the Union Territory. The move is aimed at strengthening security at key locations.
According to the Sainik Welfare Board of JK, 4,000 Ex-Servicemen have been identified for the task. This includes 435 who have licensed personal weapons. The veterans will help guard power stations, bridges, government offices, and other vulnerable sites in all 20 districts.
Officials said that the decision follows the positive role played by over 2,500 ESM during the Covid-19 response. The government has now increased the number to 4,000 to address current security needs.
The Ex-Servicemen will work under the supervision of District Sainik Welfare Officers (DSWOs), in coordination with the police and local administration. Their duties will be non-combat, focused on static guard posts, deterrence by presence, and local support.
Uniforms and basic equipment will be provided by the Sainik Welfare Board. District authorities will help with logistics and administration. Training and orientation sessions are also being planned to ensure smooth and effective operations.
The initiative aims to use the experience and discipline of ex-servicemen to support community-based security and improve public safety across Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
