SRINAGAR: Abdul Hameed Sofi, a 37-year-old resident of Arampora, Kupwara, passed away at Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara on Tuesday morning. His family has alleged medical negligence as the cause of his death.
Sofi, father of three, was admitted to the hospital earlier in the day with complaints of arm pain and discomfort.
Family members alleged that doctors initially described his condition as stable after conducting preliminary tests. However, he later died at the hospital.
Relatives alleged that a staff member, whom they claimed was a compounder rather than a doctor, dismissed Sofi’s condition as “mere drama.” They also accused hospital staff of withholding an ECG report that could clarify the events leading to his death.
“There was no qualified doctor present during the critical moments. If none were available, they should have informed us,” a family member said, adding that CCTV footage from the hospital could substantiate their claims.
Medical Superintendent Dr Aijaz Ahmed Bhat said that Sofi was admitted at 6:45 am with chest discomfort and was immediately attended to by a doctor on duty. An ECG test, reportedly normal, was conducted, and the patient was kept under observation.
“After being administered an injection and a tablet, the patient suddenly collapsed. Despite resuscitation efforts, he could not be revived,” Dr Aijaz explained. He further noted that additional tests, including TropT, were negative.
The police and local Tehsildar investigated claims of negligence. Initial findings from CCTV footage indicated that the patient was attended to by both doctors and paramedical staff, countering the allegations.
The hospital administration has promised a detailed inquiry. “A high-level committee will be formed to probe the family’s allegations, and a report will be submitted within two to three days,” Dr Aijaz assured. (KNO)
