SRINAGAR: A massive fire broke out on Saturday at the cargo complex of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, forcing authorities to suspend all flight operations as thick plumes of black smoke spread across the area, reports Reuters.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), the blaze erupted in the afternoon, prompting an immediate emergency response. Thirty-six firefighting units, assisted by Bangladesh Air Force fire teams, were deployed to control the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent airport facilities.
Officials confirmed that no casualties had been reported so far. “All landings and take-offs have been suspended until further notice,” a CAAB spokesperson said, as reported by Dawn News, adding that all aircraft had been moved to safe zones as a precautionary measure.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but an investigation has been launched. Operations at the airport are expected to remain suspended until the situation is brought fully under control.
