SRINAGAR: In a move to enhance the quality of life for artisans in the Kashmir Valley, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has partnered with the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and HELP Foundation to launch a comprehensive eye care programme. This initiative, which aims to reach 15,000 artisans, is set to provide essential vision care services, with many receiving eye screenings for the first time.

The programme will offer free eye examinations by qualified professionals, focusing on the eye health needs of artisans, fisherfolk, and students within the community. Those requiring corrective lenses will receive glasses at no cost. The initiative will also work to raise awareness about the importance of eye health. Additionally, a framework will be established for continuous monitoring and support for those with chronic eye conditions, ensuring sustained care and long-term health outcomes.

Anurag Hans, Head of Mission at EssilorLuxottica and President of the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, highlighted the transformative potential of the programme. “By providing artisans in Jammu and Kashmir with good vision, we empower them to continue their craft with confidence, preserving the state’s cultural heritage and fostering economic independence,” Hans stated.

Mrs Nighat Shafi, Chairperson of HELP Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that the initiative addresses a critical gap in healthcare for artisans in the Kashmir Valley. She emphasised the programme’s role in preserving livelihoods and promoting sustainable development within these communities.

The eye care programme will be implemented in phases, beginning with community assessments and mobilisation efforts in the districts of Srinagar, Bandipora, Baramulla, and Budgam. Trained healthcare professionals will conduct detailed eye screenings and provide immediate interventions. Educational workshops will also be organised to increase awareness of eye health and prevention. Follow-up care will be provided to those with chronic conditions, ensuring ongoing support and health monitoring.

The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, a registered charitable organisation, is committed to eliminating uncorrected poor vision in underserved communities worldwide. This partnership with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir and HELP Foundation marks a significant step towards achieving that goal in the Kashmir Valley, contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage and the improvement of overall community health.
