SRINAGAR: The government has instructed e-commerce companies to remove drinks and beverages, such as Bournvita, from the health drinks category on their platforms.

This directive stems from an inquiry conducted by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which found no official definition of ‘health drink’ under relevant regulations.

As per the media reports, the advisory, dated April 10, 2024, urges e-commerce platforms to reclassify these products accordingly.

Also, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed e-commerce food business operators to ensure accurate categorization of food products sold on their websites.

The FSSAI noted instances where items licensed under ‘Proprietary Food’ were being sold under misleading categories such as Health Drink or Energy Drink. This measure aims to prevent consumer confusion and ensure transparency in product labeling and marketing.

The government’s action follows past controversies surrounding Bournvita, particularly regarding its high sugar content.

A year prior, the beverage brand faced scrutiny after a video exposed its elevated sugar levels, prompting concerns about the health claims made in its advertisements. Subsequently, the NCPCR demanded the removal of misleading commercials promoting the drink’s purported health benefits.

By clarifying the categorization of drinks and beverages sold online, authorities seek to mitigate potential health risks associated with misleading marketing practices.

“E-commerce platforms are urged to comply with the directive and adjust their product listings accordingly. This collaborative effort between government agencies and industry stakeholders aims to enhance consumer protection measures and uphold standards for food safety and labeling in the digital marketplace,” the government said.
