Prompted by Public Complaints reflected through print and electronic media that a local book seller is charging Rs 3000 for the set of books for Class-I, the text-books being without the mandatory declaration of price, the field executives of Legal Metrology Department under the supervision of senior officers raided the premises of the school to ascertain the correctness of the compliant.
During the raid, it was observed that the school was not selling books but a local book-seller was offering the textbooks of the publisher company Cambridge University Press India.
A challan case was registered against the book-seller/wholesale book-seller/importer for offering text-books without price tag. A legal notice was served to the importer at New Delhi who in turn confessed the lapse and pleaded for compounding the offence. A penal sum of Rs 40,000 was slapped on the publisher for the lapse and Rs 10,000 each to wholesale depot/retailer book-seller. An undertaking was also taken from the offenders for not repeating the offence in future.
Pertinently, under Legal Metrology Laws, it is mandatory on every publisher/importer to print price, no of pages, complete address, Phone-no., e-mail address on the label of the books/note-books so that consumer may not deceive in any way. Moreover, note-books should also carry the declaration of size of page in metric units.
