SRINAGAR:The Government has said that renewable energy’s share of electricity generation has risen sharply this year, reaching 28.26 per cent of total generation in the current financial year 2025–26 up to October 31, 2025. The clarification was given in the Rajya Sabha in reply to a question on the country’s progress in expanding clean power.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy placed year-wise generation figures on record. In 2020–2021, renewables generated 297.55 billion units out of a total 1,381.86 billion units, equal to 21.53 per cent. In 2021–2022, the renewable contribution rose to 322.54 billion units (21.62 per cent) and in 2022–2023 to 365.65 billion units (22.51 per cent). Although 2023–2024 saw a modest fall in the renewable share to 20.69 per cent because of higher conventional generation, the sector recovered in 2024–2025 with 403.64 billion units, or 22.06 per cent of total generation. For 2025–2026, up to October 31, 2025, renewables accounted for 311.95 billion units of the 1,103.98 billion units generated, equal to 28.26 per cent.
The Ministry emphasised the distinction between generation share and installed capacity. While renewables accounted for 28.26 per cent of generation so far in 2025–26, the country’s renewable energy installed capacity was reported as 250.64 gigawatts as on 31 October 2025, representing 49.63 per cent of the total installed electricity capacity of 505.02 gigawatts. Together, non-fossil fuel sources total 259.42 gigawatts, or 51.37 per cent of installed capacity.
Between 2020–2021 and 2024–2025, the Government said, the country added 86.00 gigawatts of renewable capacity, comprising 70.04 gigawatts of solar, 12.29 gigawatts of wind, 1.36 gigawatts of bio-power and 2.31 gigawatts of small hydro. The Ministry described these additions as central to the Government’s strategy to raise the share of clean energy in the national grid, while noting that generation patterns depend on seasonal and demand-side factors as well as the availability of conventional sources.
