Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali announced the decision on Wednesday, saying the national team could not participate in the tournament under the current circumstances following recent military strikes on the country and the resulting instability, according to Daily Sabah.

As reported by Reuters, the minister said the situation after the attacks — which Iranian authorities claim killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — had created conditions that make it unsafe for the team to travel and compete in the United States, one of the host nations.

Iran had already secured qualification for the tournament and was placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand. All of its group-stage matches were scheduled to be played in the United States.

FIFA has not yet clarified how Iran’s withdrawal will affect the tournament structure. The governing body may consider disciplinary measures against the Iranian football federation and could invite another Asian team to take its place.
