DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir has developed 8 Million Litres per Day (MLD) of sewage treatment capacity under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), placing it 19th among all states and Union Territories in India.

Nationally, 4,447 MLD of sewage treatment capacity has been created under AMRUT. Jammu and Kashmir’s contribution accounts for just 0.18 per cent of the national total, significantly below the national average of approximately 124 MLD per state. Larger states such as Gujarat (1,582.4 MLD), Madhya Pradesh (962.5 MLD), and Maharashtra (833 MLD) lead in sewage treatment infrastructure, while smaller Union Territories such as Arunachal Pradesh (3 MLD) and Daman and Diu (4.21 MLD) have capacities closer to that of Jammu and Kashmir.
The newly approved projects under AMRUT 2.0, worth 1,665.11 crore, aim to improve the Union Territory’s urban water and sewage infrastructure. These initiatives are expected to address existing gaps and enhance urban sustainability in the coming years.
