The year-wise breakdown for Jammu and Kashmir shows that cervical cancer cases increased from 656 in 2019 to 676 in 2020, 694 in 2021, 712 in 2022 and 732 in 2023. This trend mirrors a nationwide increase attributed to factors such as aging populations, improved life expectancy, greater awareness leading to early diagnosis, and advances in diagnostic technology.

The government said it has acknowledged the high cost of cancer treatment, as many drugs used for these ailments remain under patent protection. However, measures have been taken to ensure affordability, including price caps on scheduled cancer drugs and restrictions on price hikes for non-scheduled medicines. Additionally, the government has reduced customs duties and GST rates on specific anticancer drugs to make them more accessible to patients.

To support affordability, the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) provides quality medicines at significantly reduced prices, with discounts ranging from 50 per cent to 90 per cent. Under this scheme, 83 cancer treatment drugs are available at Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country. The government also offers financial assistance through initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), which provides health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family per year.

Cancer diagnosis and treatment are available at various healthcare facilities, including district hospitals, medical colleges, and specialized institutions such as AIIMS, the government said. The government has also established Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment (AMRIT) Pharmacy stores in select hospitals to offer cancer drugs at lower prices.

Efforts are also being made to raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection through nationwide health campaigns. The government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that cancer treatment remains within reach for all sections of society.
