The Udhampur-based Northern Command of the Indian Army announced the significant interaction through a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the deepening collaboration between the two key forces responsible for maintaining peace and security in the Union Territory. Lt Gen Kumar conveyed his best wishes to Prabhat on his new role, affirming a shared commitment to fortifying safety and counter-terrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to an official army statement, both leaders emphasised the importance of maintaining a strong operational bond to tackle increasing security challenges in the region. “The Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police remain committed to bolstering the safety and security of Jammu and Kashmir,” the Northern Command said in its post.

The meeting takes place as the Jammu region has recently witnessed a surge in militancy-related activities. Given the complex security environment, Lt Gen Kumar and Prabhat discussed the ongoing challenges and measures required to counter emerging threats in Jammu and Kashmir.

Prabhat, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has previously served as the head of the elite National Security Guard (NSG) before his transfer to the AGMUT cadre. He is well known for his extensive work in anti-Maoist operations and is expected to bring his vast experience to the new role in JK Police.

In addition to the meeting with the police leadership, Lt Gen Kumar also visited South Kashmir, accompanied by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 15 Corps. During the visit, the Northern Commander reviewed the counter-terrorism grid and was briefed on the operational preparedness of the Army in the region.

According to the Northern Command, the review focused on ongoing counter-insurgency operations and the Army’s efforts to foster a closer soldier-citizen relationship, vital for long-term peace in the region. Kumar praised the troops for their continued efforts in maintaining security and urged them to refine their strategies in response to new threats. “Maintain a high level of professionalism,” the Army chief said while addressing the troops.
