SRINAGAR: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Monday carried out an anti-encroachment drive across multiple parts of the city, demolishing illegal structures, sealing unauthorised commercial establishments and clearing public thoroughfares as part of its ongoing efforts to restore public spaces and ensure planned urban development.
The drive was conducted under the directions of the Commissioner, JMC, and supervised by the Joint Commissioner (RE). Enforcement teams, supported by police personnel, targeted illegal constructions, unauthorised commercial activities and encroachments on roads, pavements and footpaths.
During the operation, an illegally erected structure in Sainik Colony was demolished, with the civic body reiterating its zero-tolerance policy towards unauthorised construction in residential areas. Illegal shutters raised in violation of building norms were also demolished at two separate locations.
In another action, an unauthorised commercial establishment operating on Apsara Road in Gandhi Nagar was sealed as part of the corporation’s continued crackdown on illegal business activity.
The enforcement teams also conducted an intensive clearance drive along BC Road, where a large quantity of items used to encroach upon footpaths, pavements and the main carriageway were seized. Officials said these encroachments were disrupting pedestrian movement and vehicular traffic.
Following the operation, the JMC appealed to residents and business owners to cooperate with the corporation in keeping the city free of encroachments. Citizens were urged to refrain from illegal construction and to strictly adhere to building bye-laws by obtaining all requisite permissions from the competent authorities before undertaking any construction or commercial activity.
The corporation said such drives would continue with full vigour against violators to maintain planned urban growth and ensure public safety and convenience.
