SRINAGAR: Jammu Kashmir fast bowler Umar Nazir Mir delivered a stellar performance during the Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai on Thursday, dismantling the opposition’s batting lineup with a spell of pace and bounce that left the defending champions struggling. The 31-year-old bowler claimed the prized wickets of Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shivam Dube, showcasing his prowess and reaffirming his status as a key figure in Jammu and Kashmir’s domestic cricket setup.

Mir struck early in the innings, dismissing Indian captain Rohit Sharma for just 3 runs. Using his height and pace to generate sharp bounce, he bowled a short-pitched delivery that caught Rohit off guard, resulting in a leading edge that was comfortably taken by J&K captain Paras Dogra at mid-off. Ajinkya Rahane was the next to fall, clean-bowled by Mir for 12 runs after being unable to handle the bowler’s relentless pressure. Shivam Dube was dismissed for a duck, caught by Kanhaiya Wadhawan, as Mir continued to rattle the Mumbai batting order.
The performance was a testament to Mir’s experience and skill. Standing tall at 6 feet 4 inches, the Pulwama-born pacer troubled Mumbai’s batters with his ability to extract bounce and movement. His disciplined line and length left little room for the opposition to settle, resulting in regular breakthroughs that hampered any attempts at building partnerships.
Since making his first-class debut in 2013, Mir has become a cornerstone of Jammu and Kashmir’s bowling attack. He has amassed 138 wickets in 57 matches, demonstrating consistency and resilience over the years. His prowess extends beyond the longer format; he has claimed 54 wickets in List A matches and 32 wickets in T20 cricket. His impressive performances earned him a spot in India C’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy, highlighting his ability to compete at higher levels of domestic cricket.
Mir’s sensational spell against Mumbai coincided with the much-anticipated return of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal to domestic cricket. However, both players endured disappointing outings. Jaiswal, opening alongside Rohit for the first time in domestic cricket, was dismissed for just 4 runs, trapped lbw by J&K pacer Auqib Nabi, who made effective use of the fresh wicket to generate movement. Rohit’s dismissal, a leading edge while attempting a shot on the leg side, further added to Mumbai’s woes.
Despite Mumbai’s reputation as one of the most formidable teams in domestic cricket, Mir’s brilliance exposed vulnerabilities in their batting lineup. The Jammu and Kashmir team capitalised on the early breakthroughs, with Mir’s spell setting the tone for a challenging day for the defending champions. His performance also brought attention to the quality of cricket being played in Jammu and Kashmir, with the state’s players proving their mettle against seasoned opponents.
As the match unfolded, Mir’s contribution was hailed as a defining moment, not only for his team but also for his career. With such standout performances, the fast bowler has strengthened his case for recognition on larger platforms, including opportunities in the Indian Premier League. Despite having gone unsold in previous IPL auctions, Mir’s ability to deliver under pressure and trouble top-order batters could make him an attractive prospect for franchises seeking dependable pacers.
Mir’s display at the BKC Ground serves as a reminder of the depth of talent present in India’s domestic cricket. His spell will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the highlights of this Ranji Trophy season, underscoring his importance to Jammu and Kashmir’s cricketing ambitions.
