SRINAGAR: The Mutahida Majlis-E-Ulema (MMU), a prominent Muslim religious and social body in Jammu and Kashmir, has reiterated its request for an immediate meeting with Shri Jagdambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The organisation seeks to address growing concerns within the Muslim community over the proposed changes to the Waqf Act, 2024, which they fear could adversely impact religious, social, and charitable institutions.
In a detailed letter sent on November 28, Patron Mirwaiz Umar Farooq emphasised the urgency of the matter, highlighting that the proposed amendments could threaten the autonomy and fundamental purpose of Waqf properties. He stated, “Considering the gravity of the situation and its potential impact on the community, we once again request you to give us an audience at the earliest possible time.” The MMU stressed that as Jammu and Kashmir is a Muslim-majority state, it is crucial for the region’s concerns to be acknowledged and thoughtfully addressed.
The MMU believes the amendments could have far-reaching implications, undermining the welfare and self-governance of the Muslim community. Their letter underscores the necessity of constructive dialogue over unilateral action. “A meeting with your esteemed self will provide an opportunity for meaningful dialogue,” the MMU wrote.
The organisation’s call for dialogue reflects widespread distress and apprehension among Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir regarding the potential consequences of the amendments. The MMU’s appeal is supported by a broad coalition of religious and educational bodies from the region, demonstrating the collective nature of their concerns.
The MMU anticipates a prompt and positive response, hoping for an expedited meeting to ensure that Jammu and Kashmir’s Muslim community voices are heard in shaping the Waqf Act, 2024.
