KU VCThe University of Kashmir is committed to promotion of local craftsmanship as part of its social responsibility and would take all required measures in this regard, Vice-Chancellor Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi said Wednesday.

Felicitating and distributing honorarium/cheques among successful beneficiaries/candidates of six-month certificate course in Papier-mâché, Prof Andrabi said: “I am delighted to see the beautiful work of these young and budding artisans. I feel even more delighted that Kashmir University has taken a lead in promoting local craftsmanship through such courses and programs at an institutional level.”

The Vice-Chancellor said the varsity is committed to provide all logistic, infrastructural and professional support to budding artisans.

The skill development/certificate course in Papier-mâché was conducted by University’s s Directorate of Lifelong Learning (DLL) in collaboration with the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), New Delhi.

Prof Andrabi, while hailing the candidates who have successfully completed the course, said: “As far as arts and crafts are concerned, the machine-made products have become very common and ordinary throughout the world. High-end buyers are now looking for hand-made products which are unique and aesthetic. Therefore, I believe if we can market these products properly, it will fetch good dividends to these hard-working artisans.”

Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof Mohammad Ashraf Wani and Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Naseem A Shah also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, Director DLL Prof GH Mir gave details of the six-month course. “This is the second batch of 120 candidates who have successfully completed the course at three different training centres under the supervision of DLL.”
