As mobs became restive, police finally swooped on a Border Security Force (BSF) man and booked him for eve-teasing.

Jagan Nath from 118 Bn was in his civvies and would stalk females, pass indecent remarks that triggered a reaction in Lal Chowk. Finally a group of youth caught him and beat him. They finally were taking him to the police station when a party reached midway and took over. By then he was paraded naked. Nath is not the first security man in Kashmir to be paraded naked, and the reasons for previous such incidents have not been different.

CHANDIGARH

After many years, something unusual has happened in the capital city of two states where the case about Kashmir’s notorious sleaze racket is being heard. One of the ‘victims’ has supported the prosecution while deposing before the court. The unidentified victim has supported all the nine charge-sheets and deposed against Sabeena, the kingpin. The development assumes significance as nearly half a dozen ‘victims’ had earlier retracted their statements. The case was shifted to Chandigarh Sessions Court from J&K High Court on September 4, 2006.

SRINAGAR

Ashok Razdan, an Amar Ujala reporter from Srinagar, committed suicide in his rented room in Indira Nagar. Reportedly estranged from his wife, Razdan was living lonely with a servant after he was posted to Srinagar a few years back. His other family members were living in Udhampur. His servant had informed the police and the body was recovered. After the necessary post-mortem, the corpse was despatched to Udhampur. Police said they have registered the case and is looking it from all angles.

HANDWARA
It has been an eye sore for people who knew Urdu and it was there for years. Finally, it was a north Kashmir’s Srinagar based scribe Pervez Majeed who shot a letter to the Delhi Chief Minister detailing the erroneous signage. For example, Majid wrote, the signage of Maulana Azad Road near Vice-President’s residence is written as Maulana Azarud Road; while “Azad” means “being free,” the word “Azarud” almost means “being gloomy!”, his letter read. It might have surprised the scribe because Delhi chief minister responded informing that corrective measures have been taken!

ISLAMABAD

As Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari took off from Ajmer back home, it was the turn of J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He told a TV channel in Delhi that Zardari owes him one rupee because he had bet that the Pakistani leader won’t be able to visit J&K on his India trip. They had betted when Omar visited Pakistan in 2006. “He has not (come to Kashmir) and he owes me one rupee,” Omar said, adding visit of any Pakistani leader to J&K was “long overdue.” Omar wants to visit Mirpur and Muzaffarabad (PAK).
