SRINAGAR

A day after, Mohammad Aslam Goni political secretary to Dr Farooq Abdullah said he has no knowledge how his name crept in the list of ‘prominent citizens’ who have joined Congress, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz, Tuesday said the ‘prominent figures’ approved by the Congress High Command had formally requested him for the membership.

Talking to KNS, Prof Soz, said: “Let me tell you that all the prominent people who are in the list had formally requested for the membership in Congress. We are going to organize two welcome functions in the honour of the new entrants in Srinagar and Jammu on October 20 and 21 respectively. Those who have joined from Srinagar will attend the October 20 function and those from Jammu will attend October 21 function.”

The PCC president told KNS that the party cannot force everybody to participate in these functions. “It is not like; we will send police to compel them to attend these welcome functions. But you will see who participates and who will not,” Prof Soz told KNS.

Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, when contacted by KNS, said: “We have not so far received any instructions on the issue. Dr Farooq Abdullah sahib will be in a better position to comment as Goni is his political secretary. We have convened a meeting at 6 pm in which many issues will be discussed including that of Mr Goni.”

Kamal told KNS that although Mr Goni has distanced himself from the statement issued by the Congress party but the issue will be discussed threadbare in the meeting.
