SRINAGAR: A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck offshore near Timor Island in Indonesia on Tuesday, according to the country’s Geophysics Agency.
The tremor was recorded at a depth of 31 kilometres, a factor that helps determine its potential impact on the surface. Authorities confirmed that there is no tsunami threat following the seismic event.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the quake occurred at 11:17 am local time, noting that preliminary readings of its magnitude, epicentre and depth may be revised as further analysis is carried out.
Seismologists are continuing to review incoming data, while early assessments suggest the earthquake was likely felt by a large number of people in the affected region, according to VolcanoDiscovery tracking data.
