SRINAGAR: A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted waters off the Philippines on Wednesday, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicentre was located about 68 kilometres east of Baculin, with the quake striking at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the offshore tremor could trigger aftershocks and potential damage, though no immediate reports of casualties or destruction were received.

Local authorities said residents felt the tremors but there was no panic. “It wasn’t very strong, but people did step out of their homes,” said Joey Monato, police chief of Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur province.
