Militant Killing: Awantipora Shuts for Second Day

Awantipora and its adjoining areas Monday observed a shutdown for the second consecutive day against the killing of a local militant during a gun fight on Saturday evening.

Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Irshad Ahmed Ganaie, a resident of Padgampora, Awantipora, who according to police was allegedly involved in Hyderpora deadly attack on Army convoy that claimed the lives of eight Indian Army personnel was killed in Naman Kakpora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday evening after a gun fight with forces.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that all the shops, educational institutions and business establishments remained closed while skeletal movement of traffic was observed on roads.

Large contingent of police and Para-military troopers had been deployed to thwart protests in the area. A police official said that untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the town and day passed off peacefully.
