SRINAGAR: On the occasion of Ashura, Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq delivered a heartfelt tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the beloved son of Fatimah Al Zahra (RA). He honoured Imam Hussain (RA) and his loyal companions for their sacrifice at the Battle of Karbala, urging the Muslim community to uphold the Imam’s mission of defending truth and standing with the oppressed.

After a 13-year hiatus, authorities permitted Mirwaiz to address the large gathering at the revered shrine of Alam Sahib Narwara in Srinagar, a traditional practice of the Mirwaizeen on Ashura. Men, women, and youth from various regions attended the event.
In his address, Mirwaiz elaborated on the tragedy of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, describing it as an unforgettable episode of brutality in human history. He emphasised that Yazidiyat represents the worst in human character, while Hussainiyat signifies the loftiness of human character. Mirwaiz highlighted that standing firmly for truth without fear, with full faith against tyranny and oppression, embodies the essence of Hussainiyat. He noted that Imam Hussain’s refusal to bow to the oppressor continues to inspire generations striving for justice and truth.
During the occasion, collective prayers were offered in honour of Imam Aali Muqaam and the Martyrs of Karbala.
Mirwaiz expressed deep regret over the filing of cases under UAPA against participants in the traditional 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar. These participants had raised their voices in solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians, protesting the ongoing massacre of innocent children, women, unarmed citizens, and the sick by Israeli forces. Condemning oppression and supporting the oppressed is the true tribute to Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Karbala, he added, reiterating that the people of Jammu and Kashmir stand in complete solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Mirwaiz’s arrival in Narwara was met with a warm and enthusiastic welcome, as people expressed their joy at his presence in Alam Sahib Narwara after so many years.
