SRINAGAR: Around 500 high-density apple plants were allegedly destroyed by unidentified miscreants in the Hatipora area of Behibagh in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday, causing losses estimated at over Rs 25 lakh and delivering a significant setback to a local orchard owner.
The affected plantation had been developed under the high-density cultivation model, a modern horticultural technique aimed at enhancing apple production and improving yields.
According to reports, the orchard owner found hundreds of apple plants cut down and uprooted, allegedly by unknown persons. The large-scale damage has resulted in substantial financial losses and sparked concern among residents and members of the horticulture sector.
Locals condemned the incident, describing it as a serious blow to the grower’s livelihood, and demanded strict action against those responsible. They also urged the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation and provide appropriate assistance to the affected farmer.
The incident has raised concerns among orchardists across the district, where horticulture remains one of the principal sources of livelihood for thousands of families.
