SRINAGAR: In a startling case of mistaken identity, a family in Jammu was on its way to cremate a body they believed belonged to their 27-year-old missing relative when they received a phone call from the young man himself, informing them that he was alive.
According to details, the incident occurred after Vishal, who had been missing for the past three days, was presumed dead when his family identified an unidentified body at the Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu. The identification was reportedly made on the basis of similarities in facial features and body build.
Following the family’s identification, the police completed the necessary legal formalities and the hospital authorities handed over the body to the relatives for the last rites.
However, while the ambulance carrying the body was on its way to the cremation ground, the family received a phone call from Vishal, who told them that he was alive, safe and still in Jammu.
Shocked by the revelation, the family immediately asked the ambulance to turn back and return to the Government Medical College.
The unidentified body was subsequently placed back in the hospital mortuary, while police have restarted the process of establishing the deceased’s identity.
Officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the identity of the deceased and the circumstances that led to the mistaken identification. (KNO)
