SRINAGAR: The ruling National Conference (NC) on Saturday dismissed speculations of a rift between the Lieutenant Governor-led administration and the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the two have been working in coordination. The party also reiterated its demand for the restoration of statehood to end the dual-power system in the Union Territory.

NC spokesperson and MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, while talking to reporters, said that Jammu and Kashmir currently operates as a Union Territory with both an elected government and an LG administration.
“Those talking about a tussle are only trying to create unnecessary issues. I want to assure everyone that no major problems have occurred so far between the LG administration and the elected government. If any internal issues arise, they will be resolved amicably,” Sadiq said.
He further emphasised the NC’s commitment to ending the dual-power system, noting that the elected government has already fostered a positive atmosphere since taking over. “We hope for the early restoration of statehood, which will streamline governance and accelerate the redressal of public grievances. Currently, the elected government is addressing most public concerns,” he added.
Sadiq also expressed optimism that statehood would be restored sooner rather than later and urged the LG administration to cooperate with the elected government in this transitional period.
His remarks came in response to reports of alleged tensions between the two entities, particularly regarding the transfer of officers in the Union Territory.
On delivering key promises, Sadiq assured that the pledge of providing 200 units of free electricity to consumers would be fulfilled within two to three months. “Our priority is to ensure uninterrupted power supply without unscheduled cuts. Implementing the free electricity scheme immediately could worsen the situation, but the promise will be delivered soon,” he said.
He added that modalities, such as identifying deserving and undeserving consumers, would be finalised later. For non-metered areas, a reduction in electricity tariffs is also being considered.
Sadiq further stated that the NC is committed to fulfilling its promise regarding gas cylinders, adding that the matter has already been taken up. [KNO]
