SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) legislator Tanvir Sadiq has called for comprehensive consultations before implementing a liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the need to involve all relevant stakeholders.
Speaking to reporters, Sadiq underscored the state’s dependence on tourism and warned that an outright ban on liquor could adversely impact the tourism sector. “Jammu and Kashmir is a tourist-driven economy, and we need to evaluate how such a move would affect tourists. Even many Arab countries have regulated alcohol systems,” he said.
He urged the government to consult all affected parties, including travel agents and tourism industry representatives, before making a final decision. “While we oppose the liquor trade, stakeholder engagement—especially with those from the tourism sector—is essential,” Sadiq added.
Sadiq’s comments follow private member bills submitted by PDP legislator Fayaz Mir and NC legislator Ahsan Pardesi, both seeking a liquor ban in the region. The bills are expected to be tabled during the upcoming budget session. [KNT]
