SURRENDERED: Following income tax surveys, a family having luxurious hotel and three jewelry shops in Ramban surrendered about Rs 10.85 crore undisclosed income on the basis of preliminary scrutiny of the account books and other documents of financial transaction impounded by the IT sleuths. In past one month, two income tax surveys have been conducted so far.
RULED: State High Court held a tailor from Nishat as he is accused of raping a 12-year-old girl inside his shop in May 2001. The court maintained that the accused does not deserve concession of bail. Further, the court observed that the cases of such nature need to be dealt expeditiously, directing the trial court to complete the trail in two months from the date of next hearing.
ACQUITTED: A local court in Kathua acquitted Sudesh Kumar and Bholi Devi. Both were facing trail in a kidnapping and rape case. But the girl, allegedly the victim, had changed her statement when witnesses denied any such action having taking place. Meanwhile, the court has shot a notice to the girl to show cause as to why she shall not to be punished for giving false evidence.
QUASHED: High Court has quashed the detention of Ruksana Begum alias Halima Begum, an alleged Over Ground Worker (OWG) of Hizbul Mujahidin, who was detained under PSA. She was detained on January 26, 2011 by the orders of district magistrate, Doda. Ruksana had questioned her detention on various grounds. One of them was, according to the court orders, that she was to be detained under preventive custody but she was put under police custody.
PLANNED: State government has set in motion the process to confer powers to all the courts of Additional District Judges across the state under Prevention of Corruption Act in order to handle the pendency of corruption cases and ensure prompt punishment to corrupt elements. Presently, only two Principles Courts and two Additional Courts are dealing with the cases relating to corruption which the government thinks are not enough to handle the menace.
CLEARED: The Expert Appraisal Committee of the union environment and forests ministry for River Valley and Hydroelectric Projects has given environmental clearance to the construction of Baglihar Stage-II at Chanderkote in Ramban district by the Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Ltd. The project, considered of immense importance for the state, will be generating 450 Mega Watts (MWs) electricity by March 2015.
AWARDED: Krishan Singh, a resident of Dori Akhnoor, was awarded rigorous imprisonment of seven years and a fine of Rs 40,000. Singh was guilty for making an attempt of raping an 11-year-old girl who had gone to a temple to attend a Bandara. Singh tried to make an attempt to rape her but she managed to catch the attention of a nearby resident, Tara Chand, who rescued her from the clutches of accused.
DIED: Four people, including three family members, died in an accident in Kupwara. They were found after a week by state police. Police says the deceased were boarding an Alto car and the same had rolled down in Khoni nala on Jammu-Srinagar highway.
PLANNED: State government is planning to declare cancer as a Notified Disease under which the patient would be given free treatment and enhanced attention. They have stressed the need for palliative care for the patients suffering from the life consuming disease. This was disclosed in a function organised by Hakim Sanaullah Hospital and Cancer Centre, Mazbug, Sopore to mark the World Palliative Care Day.
PURCHASING: Indian Air Force (IAF) is purchasing 12 more light Cheetal helicopters for deployment in the state. It is likely to improve resource mobilization for the army troops stationed at Siachen Glacier. Cheetal helicopters are an upgraded version of the Cheetahs with more powerful engines manufactured by HAL. The IAF has some of its squadrons of the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters deployed in Leh and Thoise for flying to provide air support along the world’s highest battlefield there, officials sources said.
BOOKED: A lady Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), presently posted in IRP 4th Bn, has been booked by Chhani Himmat police for alleged encroachment of a piece of land situated at Sainik Colony. Police said the case was registered following complaint against her by one Ashiq Hussain who had mentioned that DSP and her PSO have beaten him and warned him of dire consequences. The DSP was booked on the direction of the court under sections 154 (3) CrPC and 447, 427, 323, 506 RPC.
RETURNED: Two women from Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district were sent back by the authorities of Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) from Hajeera, Rawlakote despite possessing valid permits and not allowed to proceed further to meet their relatives across the Line of Control. Authorities described return of the women as `deliberate mischief’ on the part of PaK authorities as their permits were genuine and there was no reason for sending them back.
