KILLED: Police and paramilitary killed three more people, and injured over 70 by firing on protest in Sopore, Pattan,  and other places.  Authorities swiftly announced curfew in Srinagar and major towns. Heavy protests erupted Friday (July 30) morning soon after three youth were injured in firing in Chanpora locality of Srinagar.  One of the injured is stated to be critical.

BANNED: Within less than 24 hours of appointing a new media advisor, the government banned two local cable TV channels “Sen Channel” and Sen Awaz.” The two channels have been accused of giving wide coverage to stone pelting  and statements of separatists. The media fraternity has expressed sorrow over the move.

DEFERED: CBI Special Judge Darshan Singh deferred the hearing on the J&K sex scam till September 20, as none of the witnesses appeared in the court. The CBI submitted before court that the summons could not be served owing to disturbed conditions prevailing in Srinagar and thus they were reissued by the judge. Meanwhile, the accused were present in the court.

PREVENTED: Widening its crackdown, police on Tuesday seized a number of trucks, carrying relief materials to Srinagar. The police action triggered massive protests in Shopian and Pulwama, wherefrom the vehicles had originated. Witnesses said some 42 lorries carrying vegetables, rice and other eatables, were on its way to Srinagar when police intercepted them at Sonwar.

LOCKED: Opposition PDP members lead by president Mehbooba Mufti locked the civil secretariat gate, in a symbolic protest, on Thursday and organised a sit-in.  They were carrying placards with photographs of cops killing, arresting or beating the people. PDP president said some 1400 people mostly children are behind bars and demanded immediate release.  NC termed it a political gimmick.

SHIFTED: The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Samba was shunted out over “serious” charges of corruption, a day after the district witnessed violent protests over alleged collusion of police officials and a gang of cattle lifters. “SSP, Samba, Ragubir Singh Salathia has been removed from his post of district police chief following serious charges of corruption and he was attached by the state government,” Political Advisor to Chief Minister Divender Rana said.

DELAYED: The LOC cross over travel of passengers at Chakan de Bagh Poonch was delayed for some hours when a young girl from Pakistan administered Kashmir fell unconscious while parting from her relatives. The 24-year-old Rashida Kouser of PaK was visiting her uncle in Rajouri district last month and was scheduled to move back on weekly Poonch-Rawlakote bus service, when she fell unconscious. She was immediately shifted to District Hospital in Poonch and the bus kept waiting bus until Rashid was brought back.

COMMISSIONED: State-run hydro power generator NHPC commissioned all the three units of its 120-MW plant, Sewa II in Jammu and Kashmir. “With this… The installed capacity of NHPC has gone up to 5,295 MW,” NHPC CMD S K Garg said. Sewa-II is the third project commissioned by NHPC in the current plan period. The other other two are in Sikkim and Madhya Pradesh

RULED: A city court has said it was not within its powers to order further investigations into the abduction and murder case of prominent human rights lawyer and activist Jaleel Andrabi. The family of Andrabi who was killed allegedly by army 14 years ago has filed an application before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Srinagar Mohammad Ibrahim Wani seeking further investigations into Andrabi’s killing. The prosecution argued that further investigation into the matter as claimed by the applicant after lapse of eight years was not justifiable.

BOYCOTTED: The legislators of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) walked out of the District Development Board meeting in protest against alleged atrocities and inability of the government to punish culprits especially in the murder case of three boys in Islamabad. The PDP leaders questioned the purpose of the holding a District Development Board meeting in an atmosphere of the ‘state repression and total absence of accountability which in addition to all kinds of excesses on the people have resulted in the loss of scores of young lives.’

RE-ELECTED: Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah has been re-elected president of Jammu Kashmir Jamiat Ahli Hadees for the fourth consecutive term. Shah defeated his lone rival Moluvi Mustaq Ahmad Veeri by a margin of 83 votes. The election was held at the Jamiat Ahli Hadees headquarters at Barbarshah. In Sunday’s voting, 408 votes were cast of which Shah got 248.
