KILLED: In 5,053 road accidents 889 people were killed and 7,178 injured in the state in 11 months up to November 2010. However, during the same period 475 lives were lost to armed insurgency.

Submitted: Delhi police submitted a status report in a Delhi court in the sedition case against writer Arundhati Roy, Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, poet Varavara Rao and four others. Police told the court that an FIR had been registered and investigation was on.

Approved: The Jammu and Kashmir Industries Limited has approved golden handshake of 900 employees as part of the plan to revive its various units. In the first phase, 104 employees have been cleared for the golden handshake and an amount of Rs 7.36 crores would be disbursed among them.

ADAMANT: The BJP is adamant to go ahead with its plans to hoist the tricolour at the Lal Chowk in Srinagar on January 26. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had said that the BJP’s flag hoisting plan would serve as a provocation to the people of Kashmir. Meanwhile, separatist leader Yasin Malik has dared BJP to go ahead with the plan saying “We will see who will hoist which flag.”

CHALLENGED: Academics at the National Institute of Technology Srinagar have challenged the appointment of MS Mubashir as in-charge director pleading in the State High Court that he was not eligible for the post of professor in 1997 as he does not have a PhD degree, and consequently cannot hold the post of the in-charge director of the institute.

DESTROYED: Fire destroyed 35 shops and five houses in main market Bandipora. It took about 10 fire tenders nearly five hours to douse the fire that reportedly started from a barber shop.

UNCOVERED: JK Police uncovered a cyber bank fraud in Srinagar and arrested four persons, including two locals. The accused siphoned off lakhs of rupees from the bank accounts of people by using tampered and cloned credit and debit cards, police said. Police reportedly is looking for a Nigerian national involved in the case.

FAILED: Joining the chorus with separatists, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has said that UN has failed in Kashmir, and Palestine. Farooq’s comments came a day after Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed similar views on the international body.

BANNED: The government has banned the sale or lease of temple properties in Kashmir. The High Court had earlier directed the government to not allow constructions on Hindu temple properties, transferred to the private parties.

CURFEWED: Authorities imposed curfew like restrictions in Sopore town on the 18 anniversary of Sopore massacre on Jan 6. At least 55 persons were killed in a BSF operation in the town in 1993.

PERFORMED: Medicos at SKIMS have performed first successful Autologous Peripheral Stem Cell transplant in the hospital. The patient is progressing well.

DIALOGUE: The Awami National Conference is organising a five-region summit on “J&K Intra Civil Society dialogue” from January 2011 to March 2012 as part of chalking out a roadmap for finding a peaceful solution to Kashmir issue. The summits would be held at five places; Jammu, Srinagar, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad.
BOUGHT: Raj Bhawan or the governor’s residence will now have solar-powered battery cars to ferry visitors and guests.

OPENED: A District Passport Collection Centre was opened in the office of SP City (North) Khanyar. The office will cater to the passport applicants of the northern areas of Srinagar while the main office will cater to south.

DOCUMENTING: The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has approved a proposal for setting up of a documentation-cum-resource centre in Srinagar to compile a comprehensive database of the heritage sites and monuments. The project will be executed by INTACH.

SETTLED: Responding to calls of some Congress leaders for rotational chief ministership, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the issue has been settled by the high commands of both the coalition partners before entering into alliance. Omar said he will be the chief minister for the full six years.

SCRUTINISED: Army is under scanner for allegedly planting fake IEDs in connivance with certain ex-servicemen and army sources in Jammu and Kashmir to earn cash rewards. Sources said that  interrogation of some of the accused including Mehboob Dar and an ex-serviceman Ram Prasad show a deep-rooted “nexus” between the ex-servicemen and some military intelligence officials in planting “fake” IEDs.

CAN’T ACT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had said that he cannot take action against the Congress minister Sham Lal Sharma for calling for trifurcation of the state.
